Olympiad through the eyes of captains

“I am a lucky person. The first Olympiad for me as a coach turned out to be perfectly organized chess fest. In the last year FIDE initiated the supporting program for small and poor chess federations. They choose 3 federations from each continent and pay for their coach during the Olympiad. I was assigned for Lesotho team. I surfed in Internet for the information about the country before going to Baku. There I got to know that my wards were to skip the first round! They started to book tickets too late, so there were no more available for the proper date. That doesn’t sound too bad if you compare it with the Djibouti team which arrived before the 6th round.

Both woman and man teams consisted of young people 18-19-year-old and only one 50-year-old player was playing at the 4th board in man team. His name is Molapo Joang, he’s former minister of the country and currently in opposition party of Lesotho. They all are handsome and polite young men. They have great respect to age. For example, in Lesotho it’s forbidden to smoke next to older person, one may be seriously punished for this.

Previously I didn’t pay much attention to the project of FIDE Trainers’ commission, now I realize how important it is. Apparently, that’s the only chance for such countries as Lesotho to get access to “high technologies” in chess. Initially I was supposed to train only man team, but seeing the enthusiasm of these young people in learning, I decided to help also the woman team. It was a bit tough, but I have no sorrows. I believe I could improve their level of play during the tournament. Every next round they played better and more confidently.

The woman team consisted of 3 rated and 2 unrated players. I liked the unrated girl at the 3rd board, she gained the norm of WFM! She played quite decent chess. Men team was at more serious level. Young man Tokela, elo 1663, who was playing at the first board, turned out to be great defender. His rating will move up in the nearest time. Other players were rated between 1685 and 1750. The third board - young man and gifted tactician named Katanelo. He played very fast and sometimes after the end of the game the was more time on his clock than before the start! Our discussions made his play more thoughtful.

I introduced him the theme of candidate moves in calculation of variations. Before that he normally chose the first appropriate move and calculated it. Finally, his choice of moves became more responsible.

Naturally, their main drawback was lack of knowledge. They knew some opening theory, as there are plenty chess books on it everywhere. But in the middlegame and end game there were serious problems. The example of this may be the end game played by our 4th board.

Who could know it that rook endgame with 3 against 2 pawns is drawn. It would be funny if it were not that sad. White had…lost this endgame, so the team lost 1,5–2,5.

What is interesting that not only my team members but also other players from some African countries came to me for advice how to work on chess, which matherial to use. It means the system is working! To sum up I must admit that both Lesotho team and their coach acquired priceless experience. I hope the program will keep on working and bring more use”.

Dear sirs,

Now that the Olympiad dust have finally settled, please allow me to say that on behalf of the Lesotho Delegation that attended the Chess Olympiad in Baku, the players and the entire chess community here in Lesotho, we wish to thank FIDE and the Trainers Commission for providing us with a skilled and knowledgeable coach during the Olympiad.

Because of his skills our players were able to perform much better and this is evidenced by the fact that three of them are in line to receive tittles from their performance in the Olympiad.

Aside from being a brilliant and hard working person, coach Andrey Maksimenko is a wonderful person!

We are really thankful that he coached the players and most of them will use the skills he gave them for the rest of their lives as chess players.

Once again, on behalf of the chess playing community in Lesotho, a big THANK YOU ALL. GENS UNA SUMUS!!

Regards,

Tseliso Motloheloa

Olympiad through the eyes of captains

Chess Olympiad attracts many people who follow the performance of the best national teams. Normally they follow the games of top players, when few of them realize how much is left behind the scenes at Olympiad. It’s like an iceberg, when you only see the top of it. For example, in addition to the main medals, the teams were fighting for the medals in their rating groups. According to average team rating the tournament is divided into 5 parts. So some unremarkable last round match at 50th board may be decisive to determine Group D champion. Accordingly, the group winner receives not only medals but also feeling of success of being ahead of more than 30 teams of close rating. As we mentioned the topic, let me this year’s winners in their categories: India, Iran, Azerbaijan 3 (to pleasure of organizers), Sudan and Chinese Taipei. In women section: Russia, Belarus, Malaysia, Syria and Indonesia.

Captains’ work is also left behind the scene. Previously this position was not always taken seriously. There used to be teams with local officials in role of captains, whose main task were photo shooting and sightseeing. Nowadays there came understanding that players not only need help in booking tickets and some other technical issues but with the raise of information in preparation they need help in opening preparation, psychological support and also team composing before each round. FIDE Trainers Commission now requires team captains to be licensed coaches thus cutting off tourism at the expense of chess players. It also contributes to a more serious approach to the training process. The importance of preparation has long time been recognized by top seed teams, which normally have 2-3 more trainers apart from captain. These coaches prepare opening files against tomorrow opponents in the night and during the game itself they can sleep with a sense of accomplishment to be ready for further night work. Normally during the evening team meeting the team composition is proved and tasks for night analysis are set. The names of these nocturnal coaches are rarely mentions in press, but very often the quality if their work is being proved during games. For example Russia in addition to official Rublevsky and Filatov had also Riazantsev, Potkin, Postovsky being noticed around. We can never exclude some more guys helping through Skype. No doubts this could only be afforded by rich and ambitious federations. Mere mortal beings as a rule have no nocturnal coaches but only one captain who has to organize the optimal way of preparation for 4 players, at most he can use the 5th reserve player in some help with preparation. Far not all the countries have or are able to invite experienced coaches.

So this year FIDE Trainers’ Commission headed by Grandmasters Mikhalchishin and Grivas has implemented excellent idea by inviting famous coaches for those countries, which lack them by one reason or another. Such project provides sharing experience and chess knowledge to different regions.

For example, Haiti chess players could never dream before to have famous Mikhail Gurevich as their coach. Here is the full list.

The fact itself, that in the last round our team approached the scene and played against Denmark team, which had grandmaster even as reserved player, is surely success for country with population of 277 thousands. This success of Barbados team was noticed by press. Thus IM Farley Terry who won 5 last games in a row, including the first in his life victory over grandmaster, was announced the best sportsman of the week in Barbados. Interestingly his result could be even better. He missed most beautiful opportunity.

Obituary - IM Cristina Adela Foisor

Cristina FoisorThe Romanian chess is in mourning: one of its greatest players, IM Cristina Adela Foisor (nee Badulescu) passed away on 21st of January, at the age of 49 years.

Starting playing chess in official tournaments at 13 years, Cristina made quick progresses, winning in 1985 the bronze medal at the European Chess Championship in the Romanian resort Baile Herculane. In short time, she became a main member of the Romanian Olympic team, with 14 presences between 1988 and 2016 (13 of them at the first two boards), missing only the edition of 2008, with 7th place as best individual board result (1990) and 4th place in general standing (1994). As team performances, she won silver and bronze with Romania (1997, 2001) at the European Team Championship, as well as gold and two silvers (1998, 2000, 2001) with the club AEM Luxten Timisoara at the European Club Cup. In the continental field, it has to be mentioned the 5th place at the individual edition of 2001 and the title of European Union Champion, gained at Arvier in 2007.

At the World Women Championships, her highest performances were the qualification at the Candidate Tournament in Tilburg (1994) and the access into the quarter of finals at Moscow (2001). Sadly, the last qualification (for Tehran 2017) will no more be honoured by her presence.

Five time individual champion of Romania (from 1989 to 2013), she had many gold medals in the National Team Championships.

It is important to remember, too, her involving into chess developing and popularization, as President of the Romanian Committee for Women Chess and also grace to her blog foisorchess.wordpress.com. As trainer (alongside with her husband IM Ovidiu Foisor, National Champion in 1982), she has the accomplishment of launching, in the top chess, of their daughters WGM Sabina-Francesca (now playing for USA) and WIM Mihaela-Veronica (resident in Great Britain).

With her sudden disappearance, Cristina-Adela Foisor let a huge empty place in the National team but, also, a spiritual heritage which has to be always a landmark for the whole Romanian chess movement.

However as we draw near to the end of 2016 several interested persons approached the SCF to extend the deadline and duly submitted their ID Cards, with the last one incoming at 14 January. We were indeed blessed with 2 of them seeking upgrade of their current titles. Some from abroad attended the Arbiter’s Seminar and stayed on!

FST Thomas Luther came in and discussed the topics with FT Bong Villamayor while FI John Wong assisted mainly with the administrative work on attendance, printing of certificates and the compiling of results in consultation with the group.

After 4 days (2 weekday nights and 2 weekend afternoons), we finally developed 2 FTs, 11 FIs, 11NIs and 1 DI.

RESULTS (pdf)

All trainees have listened attentively to the lectures conducted and did well in their written test. The spectrum of experience varied as most of the trainees this time were averagely rated players with moderate coaching experience except for a few who are currently coaching full time.

Thanks to all Lecturers and trainees who were happy with their results! Till the next seminar…
